Abstract

Shaped bodies such as tubes, rods or sheets of graphite or carbon are provided with metallic reinforcing elements combined with the bodies by cementing with synthetic resinous condensation or polymerization products, or glycerol- or rubber-cement. The reinforcing elements may be rods, wires, strips or bands which may be mounted on the surface of the bodies or let into recesses therein. Synthetic resins referred to are phenol, cresol or xylenol-formaldehyde resins, polyvinyl acetate, polyisobutylene, methacrylic acid ester and polyurethane. The basic body may be impregnated with synthetic resins as above, for example by dipping the body with associated reinforcements into the liquid resin, followed by heat-hardening. Unwanted resin may then be removed from the exterior surfaces.
