785,199. Making electromagnetic wave guides; stamping. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. May 1, 1956 [May 2, 1955], No. 13375/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Apparatus for altering the shape of an end portion of an electromagnetic waveguide to change it from rectangular to circular crosssection at its outer extremity as shown in Fig. 13, comprises a base 16, a mandrel 51 the crosssection of which changes from rectangular to circular, a reciprocable carriage 34 for supporting the waveguide, a pair of longitudinally recessed dies 43 for co-operating with the mandrel, said dies being attached to the carriage and movable transversely relatively to the direction of movement of the carriage, and means for advancing the carriage supporting the waveguide and the attached pair of dies towards the mandrel so that the waveguide is forced over the mandrel, the dies being cammed towards each other to shape the waveguide on the mandrel. The carriage 34 slides in guides 17 and has a longitudinal groove 37 for receiving the tubular workpiece. A serrated plate 38 holds the waveguide in the groove 37 during the shaping operation. Stops 42 on the carriage engage the ends of the guides 17. The dies 43 have shaping inserts 44 and are slidably attached to the carriage, the closing movement of the dies around the mandrel being effected by tapered blocks 27. The mandrel comprises three sections 52, 53 and 54 which when assembled provides a contour changing from rectangular to circular and the mandrel is rigidly held in a block 21 on the base 16.
