Abstract
A spreadable self-hardening surface coating composition comprises (1) a monomeric polymerizable compound with a terminal -CH=CH2 group, e.g. styrene, butadiene and acrylic acid esters; (2) at least one wholly or partially polymerized compound obtained by polymerizing a monomer with a terminal -CH=CH2 group, e.g. polystyrene, and a redox system of a peroxide compound, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, and at least one t-amine, e.g. diethanol-p-toluidine, an a -amino- and a -hydroxy-sulphone, and which is made in two parts which are mixed at or immediately prior to the time of application, the components of each part being so chosen that hardening does not take place until the two parts are mixed. The compositions (see Group IV (a)), are used to coat and bond metals, e.g. iron, brass and light metals, by coating one surface with component (a) and the other with component (b) and pressing the two together.ALSO:A spreadable self-hardening surface coating composition comprises (1) a monomeric polymerizable compound having a terminal -CH=CH2 group, e.g. styrene, butadiene, and acrylic acid esters; (2) at least one wholly or partially polymerized compound obtained by polymerizing a monomer having a terminal -CH=CH2 group, e.g. polystyrene, and a redox system of a peroxide compound, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, and at least one t-amine, e.g. diethanol - p - toluidine, a - amino sulphone or a -hydroxy sulphone. The composition is made up in two parts which are mixed at or immediately prior to the time of application, the components of each part being so chosen that hardening does not take place until the two parts are mixed. The mixtures may also include one or more a ,b -unsaturated polyester resins, e.g. maleric acid-glycol, and/or maleic anhydride; small amounts of acrylic and methacrylic acids or amides or their polymers as binding agents; plasticizing compounds such as decalol vinyl ether and higher esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, e.g. acrylic acid butyl ester, and polyvinyl methyl and ethyl ethers; and cross-linking agents such as divinyl benzene, methyl methacrylate and dichlorostyrene. The catalyst such may be reinforced with small quantities of inorganic or organic compounds which contain a halide halogen atom, monohydric or polyhydric alcohols or heavy metal salts. Pigments, fillers, e.g. pyrogenically prepared silicon dioxide, resins, cellulose compounds, plasticisers and oils may also be present. The catalyst may be used as a solution or suspension which may constitute one part of the composition. In examples, bonds are formed with (1) a mixture of (a) mono- and polystyrene, maleic acid-glycol polyester, acrylic acid, diethanol-p-toluidine, and hydroquinone and (b) dioctyl phthalate, benzoyl peroxide and pyrogenically prepared silicon dioxide; (2) (a) as in (1) and (b) mono- and polystyrene, benzoyl peroxide, maleic acidglycol polyester and hydroquinone; (3) (a) as in (1) but without polystyrene and (b) polystyrene beads, quartz powder and benzoyl peroxide; (4) (a) as in (1) with acetyl acetone, (b) as in (2) with methyl acetone. The mixes (a) and (b) may be combined and applied to one surface or each may be applied to separate surfaces. Alternatively, they may be successively applied to one surface and mixed thereon. The composition may be used for bonding materials and glass or in the manufacture of synthetic wood.
