784,872. Magnetic recording and/or reproducing transducers. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Feb. 4, 1955 [Feb. 9, 1954], No. 3341/55. Class 40 (2). A magnetic recording and/or reproducing apparatus transducer comprises a mounting 10 in which is secured a winding 20 and to which is so pivotally attached a magnetic core 14, 15 that it is movable to a limited extent through the winding 20, resilient means arranged to urge the core in one direction relative to the mounting, and means for adjusting the position of the core relative to that of its mounting by moving in the opposite direction against the urging of the resilient means or permitting movement by the resilient means in the one direction. As shown, the resilient means comprises a compression spring 19 and the adjusting means comprises a screw-threaded cam-rod 18 whose tip 18a coacts with a stud 17 carried by the core to rock the core about its pivot pin 13. The mounting is of plastic material, carries leads 21 from winding terminals 22, has slotted ears 11 by which it may be adjustably secured in position, and has its centre line offset from the air gap 16 of the core so that by shifting the entire assembly by 180 degrees about its vertical centre line there is obtained a recording and/or reproducing time shift. The core pole tips may be honed on a magnetic drum with which the core is to operate, to provide a concave surface which corresponds with that of the drum, and proceedures for setting the gap between the transducr and the drum are described.
