Abstract

784,602. Gravity separation of solids from liquids. DORR-OLIVER, Inc. Oct. 17, 1955, No. 29504/55. Class 46. [Also in Group XXXVII] In a settling tank having at opposite ends an inlet and an outlet for liquor, at the bottom thereof an outlet for sludge &C and thereon a driving mechanism for reciprocating rakes over the full length of the bottom with automatic reversal at the ends of the tank, a control system is provided to limit the reciprocation to the immediate vicinity of the sludge outlet. An electric motor M reciprocates a rake carrier 14 along a tank 10, limit switches 22, 23 at the end of the tank effecting reversal of the motor through a relay 24 and reversing switch 25 (see Group XXXVII). Brackets 19 on the carrier 14 support rakes 20, 21 through pivoted arms 17, 18 and the rakes have blades which displace the sludge laterally as well as longitudinally. The limit switch 23 may be short-circuited by a manual switch 60 to reverse the carrier when the rakes have just cleared the sludge outlet 13, several of these short reciprocations being made if desired before the next full, automatically controlled stroke. A timing clock may actuate the switch 60 periodically. U.S.A. Specification 2,670,080 is referred to.
