Pinned rollers 3 ... 5, Fig. 1, in stepped formation, transfer layered tobacco from a slowly-moving endless belt 2 to an oscillating channel 12 or a belt conveyer common to a plurality of such belts and sets of rollers, at least two rollers 3, 4 engaging the leading end of the tobacco on the belt 2.. The rollers 3 ... 5 may run at successively lower speeds. The roller pins are helically arranged and some are joined by plates 6 extending across the length of the rollers, the bearing sets of which may be relatively adjustable. Fig. 3 shows an alternative form of channel 12 having a vertically and laterally adjustable rake comprising pins 18 on a shaft 17 reciprocated transversely to the direction of feed of the belt 2. The channel 12 may be pivotally mounted on coil or blade springs or, in Fig. 3, on rollers 15 and be oscillated by a crank drive.
