Abstract
The invention comprises metal complexes of amino-acids of the formula <FORM:0784508/IV (a)/1> where M and B are divalent metal atoms, B being the same as M (except where calcium) or one which forms a chelate of lower stability, Y is alkylene or cyclo-alkylene interposing two or three carbon atoms between the two nitrogen atoms, R is b -hydroxyethyl, n is 2 and x is -3. These and similar compounds in which R is the carboxymethyl ion, n is 1 and x is -4 are made by forming the acid chelate of one metal and reacting it with a compound of the other metal. Specified salts are the Ca-Fe, Ca-Mg, Ca-Zn, Ca-Cu, Ca-Mn, Ca-Co, Ca-Ni, Zn-Fe, Zn-Cu, Zn-Ni, Zn-Pb, Zn-Mn, Cu-Cu, Cd-Cu and Pb-Pb salts of ethylene-diamine tetracetic acid and the Zn-Pb, Zn-Ni, Zn-Co, Cu-Cu, Cu-Cd, Mn-Fe and Pb-Pb salts of N - (b - hyroxyethyl) - ethylenediamine triacetic acid. Y may also be propylene, trimethylene, isobutylene or cyclohexylene and mercury, strontium and barium are mentioned as other suitable metals.ALSO:Compositions to be added to the soil to correct trace-metal deficiencies comprise a compound of the formula: <FORM:0784508/I/1> in a solid carrier, where M and B are divalent metal atoms, B being the same as M (except where calcium) or one which forms a chelate of lower stability, Y is alkylene or cyclo-alkylene interposing two or three carbon atoms between the two nitrogen atoms and either R is b -hydroxy-ethyl, n is 2 and x is -3 or R is the carboxymethyl ion, n is 1 and x is -4. Suitable carriers are sand, clay, yermiculite, lime, limestone, compost, fertilisers and resinous materials such as the polyacrylonitrile or acrylate soil conditioners. Specified salts are the Ca-Fe, Ca-Mg, Ca-Zn, Ca-Cu, Ca-Mn, Ca-Co, Ca-Ni, Zn-Fe, Zn-Cu, Zn-Ni, Zn-Pb, Zn-Mn, Cu-Cu, Cd-Cu and Pb-Pb salts of ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid and the Zn-Pb, Zn-Ni, Zn-Co, Cu-Cu, Cu-Cd, Mn-Fe and Pb-Pb salts of N-(b -hydroxyethyl)-ethylenediamine triacetic acid. Mercury, strontium and barium are mentioned as other suitable metals. The active material may form 5-50 per cent of the composition.
