Abstract

784,196. Turbine blades. SPURRIER, F. R. Dec. 13, 1955 [Dec. 20, 1954], No. 35825/55. Class 110 (3). A hollow, sheet-metal, air-cooled turbine blade comprises an outer skin 10, an inner skin 16, separator grids 11 being disposed between the inner surface of the outer skin and the outer surface of the inner skin. Each separator grid 11 comprises a longitudinally-extending central portion 12 and arms 13 extending therefrom on either side, channels 24 being formed between the arms 13 and the outer and inner skins 10, 16. Holes 17 are provided through the inner skin 16 adjacent the ends of the channels 24 near the central portions 12 of the separator grids. A channel-section spar 18 extends through the inner skin 16, the portion 19 of the spare being in contact with one wall of the inner skin 16 and the portions 21 of the spar being in contact with the other wall of the inner skin, the web portions 20 of the spar extending between the two walls of the inner skin. Three longitudinal passages 22, 25, 26 are thereby provided through the blade. The portion 19 of the spar is provided with holes 23 which register with holes 17 in the inner skin 16. The inner skin is formed of two parts which are spaced apart at the leading and trailing edges so as to provide openings 27, 28 from the passages 25, 26. The central passage 22 is of increasing cross-sectional area towards the blade tip and the passages 25, 26 are of reducing section towards the tip. Cooling air enters the passages 25, 26 at the root end and flows towards the blade tip, and discharges through the openings 27, 28 into the passages 24, the air flowing from the passages through holes 17, 23 into the central passage 22 finally discharging at the blade tip. The components of the blade are made of sheet metal and are secured together by welding or brazing.
