Abstract

783,900. Exhaust brakes; stopping. ASH & CO., Ltd., T., and BRITISH ELECTRIC TRACTION CO., Ltd. Feb. 24, 1956 [Feb. 25, 1955], No. 5688/55. Classes 7(5) and 7(6) [Also in Group XXXI] An exhaust brake valve 18 is elliptical in shape and pivoted about an axis 32 which is offset so that the force of the exhaust gases on the closed valve tends to open it. The valve is closed against the force of a loading spring 23 by a solenoid 12 mounted on an inclined face 16 of a pipe section 15 having short spigots 16 adapted to engage in corresponding sockets in the adjacent ends of the exhaust pipe sections. The solenoid is controlled by a switch incorporated in a brake pedal 14, Fig. 4, used for operating the wheel brakes, and by the battery cut-out 53 which breaks the circuit of solenoid 12 when the engine speed drops to idling, allowing the brake valve 18 to open to prevent stalling of the engine. The operating lever 22 of the valve 18 may be connected by a cable 52 to the fuel cut-off lever 50 of a fuel injection pump so that the fuel supply is cut off during engine braking A switch 55 in a circuit by-passing the cut-out 53 and pedal switch may be operated to energize solenoid 12 tb cut off the fuel when the engine is idling. The valve 18 is stiffened by ribs 30, 31, and its pivot axis is displaced laterally of the central plane through the seating surface 33 of the valve in addition to being offset from the centre of the valve. The switch on the brake pedal 14 comprises a rubber covered plate 38, Fig. 7, carried by the pedal 37 and rocked about a pivot 40 when depressed by the driver's foot, whereby a switch 44 in the circuit or solenoid 12 is closed. The plate 38 is held raised by a spring 41 and its movement is guided by a peg 43 engaging in a boss 42. Specification 742,323 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 753,104.
