Abstract

A process of making a translucent soap composition, especially in bar form, includes the steps of adjusting the moisture content of molten neat soap to 16-20 per cent by weight by rapid and uniform drying, preferably in a tubular drier, and adjusting the salt content so that it is 0.5-1.0 per cent of the dried soap, the adjusted moisture and salt contents being so related that a translucent soap bar can be produced by normal compacting of the soap composition after cooling to below its solidification temperature. Best results are obtained by saponifying a charge of 75 per cent tallow and 25 per cent coconut oil either solely with caustic soda, or with caustic soda followed by caustic potash, to yield a soap mixture which may be used in the process. Any fat stock normally used for soap-making may, however, be used.
