Abstract

783,619. Hydrostatic transmissions; fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. DOWTY EQUIPMENT, Ltd. Oct. 14, 1955 [Oct. 25, 1954], No. 30704/54. Classes 69 (2) and 135. An hydraulic transmission, for driving an alternating current generator at substantially constant speed from an aircraft engine, comprises a fixed displacement swash-plate pump driving a similar motor, and a governor controlled throttle valve controlling the pump inlet. The pump comprises cylinders 21 socketed in a plate 23 carried by a casing 14 fast with an input shaft 5, and pistons 17 socketed in a bearing ring 19 rotatably mounted on a stationary wobble plate 24 of fixed slope. The motor comprises cylinders 58 socketed in a plate 55 fast with the casing 14 and pistons 56 socketed in a bearing ring 54 rotatably mounted on a wobble plate 53 fast with an output shaft 7. An extension 66 of the output shaft carries an eccentric 65 actuating a disc valve 64. Pump discharge passes through check valves 38 and the disc valve 64 to the motor, the exhaust from the motor passing through valve 64 and inlet check valves 39 to the pump. A throttle valve 47 controls the liquid supplied to the inlet check valves 39, the valve 47 being controlled by means of a linkage from a servomotor piston 95. Servopiston 95 works in a cylinder 96 and is moved to the left by a spring 112 and to the right by liquid supplied by a gear pump 74, which also supplies make-up liquid. Supply and exhaust of liquid to and from the servo-cylinder is controlled by a valve spool 87 controlled by a centrifugal governor 85 rotated from the output shaft and by a follow-up valve sleeve 88. At the maximum speed of the prime mover the throttle valve is arranged to be fully closed so that the motor will do no work and the input and output shafts rotate at the same speed. At cruising speed of the prime mover the throttle valve is partially open, and at the minimum operational speed the valve is fully open so that the motor operates at maximum speed to give the required constant output speed.
