Abstract

783,612. Floor cleaning machines. COMPAGNIE ELECTRO-MECANIQUE. July 5. 1954 [July 6, 1953; June 17, 1954], No. 19596/54. Classes 60 and 138(1). [Also in Group XXXV] A floor treating machine has an electromagnetic A.C. energized system and includes two movable parts of equal mass each having a work member (e.g. a brush) fixed thereto and resilient means co-operating with each movable part so that they execute vibratory motion. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, two spaced apart electromagnets each comprising a coil 1 and laminations 4 are secured by members 2 to floor waxing brushes 3. Each electromagnet is secured at 7 to an end 5 of a single turn 6 of a large coil spring. On the middle portion of the turn 6 between clamps 8 is a socket 9 for receiving the machine handle. This middle non-vibratory portion of the spring supports the machine casing which is surrounded by a buffer strip. Alternating electric current is supplied to the electromagnets by a cable carried along the handle and the brushes are vibrated to and fro at twice the frequency of the current supply. The embodiment of Fig. 2, utilizes two blade springs 11 each carrying an electromagnet at 10, the ends of the springs being held in clamps 12 to which the casing and handle are secured. In further embodiments described with reference to Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), either two blade springs each clamped at one end only, or a single horse-shoe shaped spring are utilized. The embodiment of Fig. 5, has a single coil 21 supported by a member 26 from the non-vibratory central portion of a spring 25. The ends of the spring are connected to armatures 24 of E-shape, reciprocable in the coil and each carrying a brush 23. The single coil may be supported from the fixed ends of two blade springs or a single horse-shoe shaped spring as described with reference to Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown). The brushes may be replaced by abrasive sheets arranged on suitable supports, or by washing cloths.
