Abstract

783,607. Diaphragms. AGFA CAMERAWERK AKT-GES. Jan. 20, 1954 [May 21, 1953], No. 1763/54. Class 97(1) A continuously adjustable diaphragm for the light-accepting, aperture of a photometer, especially a photo-electric exposure meter has two or more elements each arranged for angular movement between an open position at an angle to the plane of the diaphragm aperture and a closed position parallel to the plane of the aperture in which closed position the elements overlap and not more than one element closes the aperture completely, and a common control means causes said elements to take up successively their open or closed positions. As shown, the diaphragm comprises three pairs of plates 1, 1<SP>1</SP> each covering an aperture 2 and each plate 1 has an opening 5 of area 1/64 of the area of the aperture while each plate 1<SP>1</SP> has an opening 5' which when both plates are in the closed position uncovers 1/64 of the area of the opening 5. The plates 1, 1<SP>1</SP> are pivoted about axes joining vertical pivots 3 or 3' and slots 12, 12<SP>1</SP> on the pivot arms of the plates engage pins 11, 11<SP>1</SP> on slides 10, 10<SP>1</SP> which are spring-urged against cams 8, 8<SP>1</SP> on a rack-driven shaft 7a, the cam profiles being chosen so that the plates 1<SP>1</SP> are moved to the position shown before the plates 1 are moved to open the diaphragm fully. If desired the openings 5, 5<SP>1</SP> may carry opal glass discs or other lightdiffusing material, while if it is desired to be able to reduce the illumination to zero, each plate 1<SP>1</SP> may be made completely opaque and may entirely cover the aperture 2. Instead of openings in the plates, the plate 1 may be opaque but smaller in area by 1/64 of the area of the aperture 2 while the plate 1<SP>1</SP> is larger than the plate 1 but fails to cover the aperture by 1/64 of the area uncovered by the plate 1 but in this case small changes in the initial movement of the plate 1<SP>1</SP> effect larger changes in aperture than in the arrangement shown. In a further embodiment, the plates may cover the aperture 2 completely but each has a transmission factor of 1/64.
