783,474. Photo-electric control arrangements. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ. Aug. 22, 1955 [Aug. 23, 1954], No. 24182/55. Class 40 (3). [Also in Groups XIX and XXXVIII] Apparatus for determining the position of a point on a plane given the differences between the distances of that point from three fixed points on the surface (see Group XIX) comprises three rods, such as 3, having a common pivot 2 and each rotatable about, and longitudinal movable relative to, a respective pivot 11 representing a corresponding one of the three fixed points. In use, two of the rods are driven by means of respective motors 17 so as to move the pivot 2 which in turn varies the effective length of the third rod 3. For this purpose, the rod 3 is followed by its supporting frame 14, on which it is relatively movable, under the control of a photo-electric follow-up system. The latter comprises a pair of photo-cells 20, 20<SP>1</SP> carried on the frame 14 together with a light source and two fixed prisms or mirrors 19, 19<SP>1</SP> between which a light beam is normally directed by a prism or mirror 21, rotatable by movement of a holder 12 secured to the rod 3 relative to the frame 14. Thus, on movement of the rod 3, one or other of the cells is activated and a corresponding one of a pair of reversely operating motors, Fig. 7 (not shown), is energized. These motors control a synchro-motor associated with the motor 17. The motor 17 drives a shaft 16 on which is threaded a nut 15 carried by the frame 14, and is operated in the appropriate direction to cause the frame 14 to follow the holder 12. The driving synchromotor also adjusts a variable resistance so that the value of the resistance varies in accordance with the effective length of the rod 3. The resistance is connected in a bridge circuit in which the known difference values are set and balance of which indicates that the position of the pivot 2 corresponds to that of the point to be determined.
