Abstract
783,346. Valve amplifying circuits. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Oct. 4, 1955 [Jan. 18, 1955], No. 1468/55. Class 40(6). An amplifier in which the phase-shift/frequency characteristic is a function of signal amplitude comprises a valve 5 with non-linear anode and cathode impedances A, K respectively. As shown, each impedance comprises a resistor A2, K2, respectively shunted by a rectifier A3, K3 in series with a blocking condenser A5, K5. The circuit elements are so chosen and the biases applied to the rectifiers from potentiometers A4, K4 so set that for low frequencies the distortions introduced by the networks A, K balance out and the amplifier is linear. At higher frequencies, however, an additional condenser A1 shunting the anode load destroys the balance and causes the phaseshift to vary with signal amplitude. Additional variable resistors A6, K6 may be used in order to obtain a desired characteristic. As shown, the amplifier is preceded by a cathode-follower 2 with D.C.-restoring diode 3 in its grid circuit. The arrangement is more particularly intended for use in colour picture transmission, to apply correction for non-linear phase distortion produced in the modulator.
