783,226. Malting. MEYER MALT & GRAIN CORPORATION, G. J. Sept. 23, 1955 [March 2, 1955], No. 27191/55. Class 14 (2). Apparatus for malting grain comprises a tower 21, a centrally-disposed flue 71, steeping tanks 95, 96 and germinating chambers 110, 111 ... 115 spaced about the flue, drying bins 30, 31 under the germinating chambers, and one or a number of furnaces 26 so arranged that heated gas from the furnace 5 is conducted through the drying lines to the flue. Atmospheric air drawn in through louvres 140 is passed into ducts 145, which house a refrigerating unit 142, a heater 143 and water sprayers 144, and is passed by ducts 150 and vertical ducts 151 through louvres 155 across grain compartments 24 in the germinating chambers, is then passed by way of louvres 156 into an annular tube 72 round the flue 71, is extracted therefrom by a fan 165 and is returned through pipes 173 into the ducts 145. The circulation of air through the germinating chambers may be reversed by operation of flap valves 147. Heat transfer from the flue 71 to the circulating air may be increased by the provision of arcuate metal plates in the column 72. Grain elevated to an entry point A is fed to the steeping tanks 95 by screw conveyers in the troughs 88 and is fed subsequently to the other steeping tanks 96. After steeping, the grain is allowed to fall by gravity through pipes 102 to warms 104, which deliver the grain into the compartments 24 in the uppermost germinating chamber 110. After a prescribed time the grain is discharged by finned rollers 125 into the next lower germinating chamber 111, and so on until germination is completed. The grain then falls successively into the two series of drying bins 30, 31 and is finally discharged to storage hoppers 45.
