783,128. Controlling gas burners. MAIN WATER HEATERS, Ltd. Dec. 7, 1955 [May 31, 1955], No. 15625/55. Class 75(1) [Also in Group XIII] In a gas-fired instantaneous water heater in which water flows through a sinuous externally finned pipe heated by a gas burner controlled by a thermostat, the heat responsive element 30 of the thermostat is disposed in the finned pipe. The element is a cylindrical bulb connected by a capillary tube 32 to a bellows 33 operating the gas valve. The Provisional Specification states that the heat responsive element is arranged about half-way along the finned pipe, where the temperature is midway between its initial and final temperatures. It also describes an instantaneous or storage water heater in which a small burner additional to the main burner may heat the part of the pipe containing a heat-responsive element. When the water is stagnant and the main burner shut off, the element is heated enough through the stagnant water to close the main gas valve. As soon as the water supply is turned on, it cools the element enough to open the main gas valve The small burner may also heat a second heat-responsive element actuating a gas valve in series with the first, so that if the small burner goes out the gas supply to the main burner is cut off.
