An optical glass having an index of refraction (D line) higher than 1À745 and an AbbÚ number between 42 and 29 comprises PbO 18-60 per cent, ZnO 3-15, B 2 O 3 22-35, and up to the' percentages stated of some or all of La 2 O 3 30, ThO 2 15, ZrO 2 . 5, SiO 2 10, and alkaline earth oxides (including Be up to 5) 20. Optionally up to 6 per cent of Al 2 O 3 , and 3 per cent of P 2 O 5 may be present and also less than a total of 5 per cent of alkali, Cd, Ta, Sb, As, Nb, W, Ti and Bi oxides.
