Abstract

782,178. Water-tube steam boilers. WEBB, H. W. B. Sept. 13, 1955 [Sept. 14, 1954], No. 26663/54. Class 123(2) A steam boiler comprises a number of individual water-tubes connected in groups, all the tubes in a group being bent to the same irregular shape and assembled side-by-side with alternate tubes reversed or inverted whereby there are formed gaps for the passage of hot gases between some portions of adjacent tubes, with other portions in contact to form a closed wall to deflect the gases. In the form shown, two nested tube groups A, B are housed in a casing C provided at one end wall with an oil burner OB, the opposite end wall C1 being removable for access to the tubes. The group A and B tubes are respectively connected for thermo-siphon water flow between inlet headers A2, B2 and outlet headers A1, B1. Each of the tubes of group A is of the same M shape, the space between the inner legs Ma of the assembled tubes forming the combustion chamber CC of the unit. The inner legs Ma are joined by an inclined tube portion Mc whilst the curved bend r joining one inner leg to the outer leg Mb is of smaller radius than that of the bend R joining the other inner leg to the other outer leg Mb1. With the tubes arranged side-by-side and alternately inverted, gaps G, G1 are formed between tube portions Mc and Mb, Mb1 respectively, whilst the inner legs lie in contact to form walls W. defining the top and bottom of chamber CC. The group B tubes are also of an identical M shape with bends of differing radii connecting their outer and inner legs Mg, Me, but the tube portions Mf connecting the inner legs are not inclined so that, with the tubes assembled side-by-side and alternately inverted and nested in the group A tubes, closed walls W2, W3 are formed by tube portions Mf, Mg respectively whilst gaps G2 are formed between the inner legs Me. In operation combustion gases pass through the gaps G, are deflected by wall W2 and flow in a serpentine path between the tubes passing through gaps G2 and G1 and finally discharging through outlet flues F1, F2. Baffle plates 5, 6 are fitted where indicated to prevent shortcircuiting of the gases.
