Abstract

782,147. Multiple sheet glazing units. LIBBEY-OWENS-FORD GLASS CO. Oct. 17, 1955 [Oct. 22, 1954], No. 29482/55. Class 56. Multiple sheet glazing units are made by supporting a pair of glass sheets 31, 32, Fig. 8, in spaced face-to-face relation in a substantially vertical position, heating tne edge portions of the sneets and bringing these edges together into fusion contact with one another. At a loading station 39, Fig. 5, the sheets are caused to adhere to spaced-apart vacuum platens 56, 57 and, after passing through a preheating zone 163, pass through four fusing zones A, B, C, D in each of which the opposed edge portions at the bottoms of the sheets are subjected to local heating and bending and are caused to fuse together. In passing from each fusing zone to the next the platens and sheets are rotated through 90 degrees (and locked in their new positions) so that each of the four pairs of opposed edges become fused together in turn. The localised heating in the fusion zones comprises burners 164 ; these are followed by pairs of shaping rollers 165, Fig. 8, and by finishing burners 166. The various burners and rollers are adjustable vertically and horizontally and, according to the shape or spacing of the rollers, the fused edges may take any of the forms shown in Figs. 2-4. After passing the annealing zone 227, Fig. 5, the completed units are unloaded at the station 40.
