Abstract
782,141. Shaping glass articles. EGYESULT IZZOLAMPA ES VILLAMOSSAGI R. T. June 21, 1955 [June 24, 1954], No. 18003/55. Class 56. A closed-ended glass tube 13, particularly an envelope of an electric discharge device, is shrunk to accurate internal diameter on a rotating mandrel 1 with means for maintaining a vacuum between the mandrel and the inside of the tube comprising a hollow central shaft 6 communicating with radial slots 4 in the domed head 2. The bottom end 11 of the tube is heated until it collapses on to and seals against the mandrel whereupon the heating is continued upwardly, with the vacuum being maintained, until the entire tube engages the mandrel up to its closed top end. The domed end 14 of the article is preferably heated and shaped on to the domed end of the mandrel before the bottom end of the tube is heated and the vacuum applied. The mandrel is internally cooled.
