Abstract
782,010. Feeding webs. DEHN, S. G. (Robertson, T. D.). Feb. 6, 1956, No. 3678/56. Class 100((1) An apparatus for feeding and accumulating a supply of web material comprises a pair of coacting feed rollers one of which is driven, a receptacle, below the feed rollers, into which the feed rollers deliver the web material, means rotatably supporting the rollers with their axes substantially parallel, the driven roller having a plurality of parallel spaced-apart and substantially horizontal members each extending through one of a plurality of spaced-apart annular grooves in the general direction of web feed to guide the web into the receptacle. As shown, feed rollers 10, 12 mounted in bearings in supports 14, 16 feed a web 108 into a receptacle 112. Bearings 36, 38, supporting the roller 10 are independently adjustable by screws 44 to permit greater pressure being exerted between the rollers 10 and 12 at their end remote from a driving pulley 42 than at the end adjacent thereto, thereby overcoming distortion of the rubber surface of the roller 10 due to torque. The roller 12 is rotatably mounted between members 46, 48 of a frame 50 pivoted on a shaft 52. The frame 50 is urged upwardly by springs 54 tensioned by rotation of nuts 60. The frame 50 can be rocked downwardly by rotating a member 62 about a shaft 64 carrying a handle 67. The member 62 has a flat surface 63 for engaging the upper edge of members 46, 48 upon clock-wise rotation thereof to hold the roller 12 apart from the roller 10. A plurality of spaced-apart rigid rods 70 extend parallel to one another from an angle iron 72 to an angle iron 74, the angle irons 72, 74 having holes 73, 75 respectively which slidably receive the rods 70, thus forming a frame 68. The frame 68 is adjustable axially of the rollers 10, 12 by sliding pivot pins 82 through holes 84, the pins 82 being retained in adjusted position by set screws 86. The angle iron 74 has brackets 90 secured to the supports 14, 16 by bolts 92 engaging slots in the supports to permit adjustment of the frame 68 about the pivot pins 82, such that the rods may be located in spaced relation to the bottom walls of grooves 88 in the roller 10. A doctor blade 94, preferably of fibre, prevents the web being carried around the rcller 12; the blade being adjustable by a screw 104 which rocks an angle iron support about a rod 102. In operation, the web 108 is drawn from a supply over a guide roll 110 by the rollers 10, 12 and is deflected into the receptacle 112 by the rods 70 wherein it accumulates to provide a supply from which it may be drawn as required. The rods 70 which are of electrically conducting material remove static electricity from the web, thereby facilitating guidance of the web in the desired path. In a modification, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), both rollers 10, 12 have annular grooves through which rods 70 and similar rods 116 extend, the grooves being relatively offset axially of the rollers.
