Abstract

<PICT:0781994/III/1> <PICT:0781994/III/2> In a process for the fluidized calcination of finely divided alumina hydrate, said material is successively treated in at least three stages including at least one preheating bed A, B, a calcining bed C maintained e.g. at 1600 DEG to 1800 DEG F. by the combustion of fuel therein and a cooling bed D e.g. at 800 DEG to 1000 DEG F. through which a fluidizing gas also passes successively in the opposite direction and at least a part of the solids entrained in the gas discharging from the, or the initial, preheating bed is separated from said gas and transferred directly (via line 63) to the cooling bed. In Fig. 1, to which the above letters and numeral relate, heat is initially supplied to the reactor by means of torch 70 having fuel and air lines 71 and 72, but afterwards it is necessary only to supply fuel through one or several conduits 73 to the reaction zone. In the preferred embodiment (Fig. 2) the separated solids are returned to a portion 29a of the cooling bed (e.g. at a temperature of 1000-1300 DEG F.) confined by a baffle 75 having an opening 76 therein for passage of the solid to the remainder of the bed, where a temperature of 700 DEG to 1000 DEG F. may obtain, before cooling and discharge. Examples are given: in the first, temperatures of about 330 DEG , 690 DEG , 1700 DEG and 900 DEG F. obtain respectively in beds A, B, C and D and the product had a loss on ignition of 0.6 per cent and absorbs on ageing in a moist atmosphere, 2.4 per cent by weight of water; in the second example the temperatures were about 420 DEG , 800 DEG and 1800 DEG F. in beds A, B and C respectively and in a cooling bed having an area divided in the ratio 1:5, the smaller, mixing zone was at about 1300 DEG F. and the cooling bed proper at about 825 DEG F.
