Abstract

781,623. Valve bags. INTERNATIONAL PAPER CO. May 20, 1955 [Nov. 26, 1954] No. 14574/55. Class 94(2). A machine folds the valve corner of a gusseted paper &c. bag to form a valve and inserts a valve sleeve which it forms from a web, the valve being finally folded about the sleeve. Each bag A, Fig. 16, is placed against stops 155, 156 with fingers 20, Figs. 3, 16, 18, disposed within the gusset adjacent the valve corner and plates 21 on either side of the bag. The plates 21 first swing inwards to clamp the bag between them and then both they and the fingers 20 pivot about a vertical axis through 90 degrees and fold the valve corner to the form shown in Fig. 7. Plates 52 swing upwards about a shaft 49 to assist in maintaining the valve flat during .sleeving. The sleeves 84 are cut from a web which passes over a guide roller, 87 to draw rolls on shafts, 91, 92, and to cutting and creasing rolls, the latter producing a transverse crease adjacent the trailing edge of the sleeve. The sleeves then pass to glue means 103 for applying adhesive to the trailing edge. The prepared sleeve blanks are fed into grippers 117 on a continuously operating chain conveyer 112 and are carried to transfer devices for inserting the trailing edge between the valve lip and the bag sides. The transfer devices 136, Figs. 18, 24, 28, 29, consist each of an arm 137 rotating continuously about a shaft 132 and having clamping plates 148, 149 which grip a sleeve 84 between them for removing it from the conveyer 112. Each arm carries a tucking plate 153 which enters between the valve lip and bag sides to guide in the trailing edge, Fig. 28, and then pivots backwards on its arm at such speed as not to interfere with the deposited sleeve. At the same time the nose of the plate 149 of each device, presses the outer portion of the sleeve against the valve. A vertical folder 71, Figs. 18, 29, centrally placed in respect of the sleeve 84, is swung upwards on an arm 69 by a rack and pinion 63, 68. The folder is projected from its carrier plate 70 by an abutment 75 on a control wire 74 engaging a part of the machine frame, and folds the sleeve to the form shown in Figs. 9, 29. The plates 21 again fold inwards to clamp the valve and sleeve and consolidate the fold. The bag is filled and closed elsewhere in known manner, the closure being as in Fig. 1. If desired the sleeves may be longitudinally creased by a wheel 157, Fig. 16, co-operating with the roller 87. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 598,461.
