Abstract

781,453. Photo-electric indicating systems. BRITISH COTTON INDUSTRY RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Aug. 20, 1954 [May 20, 1953], No. 14111/53. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group IX] The staple length of fibres in a specimen of loose fibres is determined by preparing a double fringed layer having its fibres substantially parallel and measuring distance between two positions at opposite ends of the specimen at which the maximum rate of charge in fibre numbers occurs on movement to each side of the position. As shown, the specimen (Figs. 1 and 4) is spread out on a platform 10 which is movable by means of a flexible tape running over each drum and driven manually from a knob outside the housing. Light from a source 22 passes through condenser 23, slit mesh 24 and lens system 25 and is reflected by a mirror 26 past a fixed partition 29 so as to form two slightly separated parallel lines of light 27 on the surface of the specimen. Light reflected from each of these lines falls on the corresponding one of photo-electric cells 30. This arrangement is triplicated and the two sets of three cells are connected in opposition to each other and to a sensitive galvanometer. Potentiometers 31 are provided to adjust cell sensitivity. In use, the platform is moved until the galvanometer reading is a maximum, this indicating that the maximum rate of charge of the number of fibres on each side of the line takes place. A counter 19 geared to the platform is then set to read zero. The platform is then adjusted to the other end of the sample and a maximum meter reading found at that end when the counter reads the distance x which is the nodal length of the fibres. In a modification (Figs. 5, 6, and 7, not shown), the specimen is attached to a platform which is then carried by a manually-driven belt. An indicating drum may be clutched at will to the belt to indicate the nodal distance and a weighted string around the indicating drum is used to set the indicating drum to zero automatically.
