In a telephone system using overhead lines including carrier circuits with intermediate repeaters and straight through circuits, lowpass filters subdivided into two half-sections each comprising series chokes L1, L2 and shunt capacitors C1, C2 are connected shunt capacitor to shunt capacitor in the straight through circuits FF to reduce feedback in the repeatered circuits due to induction and are arranged so that they reduce induced currents in phase coincidence and in phase opposition and serve also as delay chokes for induced surges. Lightning protectors 2 are fitted on the line side of each half-section. Separate coils may be provided to deal with the two types of induced currents although one coil having two windings may be used for both, their combined inductance being effective in the case of phase-opposition and their mutual inductance only in the other. The filter cut-off frequency is lower in the former and the attenuation in the stop band is higher. Coil input turns are more heavily insulated for a higher interturn voltage. The low-pass half sections for a group of lines may be disposed with protectors in a pole-mounted common housing and when a cable connection including a disconnecting point is made between two halfsections the sheathing is connected through and earthed at the disconnecting point.
