Abstract
781,042. Testing by nuclear radiation. MOLINS, D. W., POWELL, G. F. W., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. Aug. 15, 1952 [Aug. 15, 1951], No. 19271/51. Class 40 (3). [Also in Groups VI, XXXV and XXXVI] In an automatically controlled cigarettemaking machine (see Group XXXV) the mass of a predetermined length of the moving filler on a tape is measured by a beta-ray mass measuring unit. In this unit the cigarette filler passes between guides 52, Fig. 2, and radiation from a beta-ray source 111, after passing through an aperture 135 in a screen 124 and through the cigarette filler, influences an ionization chamber 110 to produce an electrical signal. Ray source 111 is adjustable towards and away from the ionization chamber 110 by means of a knob (not shown) and a pointer indicates the set position. When checking the measuring unit one of the metal diaphragms 125, 126, 127 of thickness equivalent to different known masses of tobacco is brought between the ray source and the ionization chamber. If by releasing a clamp 151, ionization chamber 110 is swung away in the direction of the arrow, the operator is protected by a flap 147 which moves automatically to cover the opening of ray source 111. Electric heaters (not shown) prevent condensation within the measuring unit. The output of a second identical measuring unit with, between its ray source and ionization chamber, a metal diaphragm equivalent to the desired tobacco mass, is connected in opposition to the first to produce a signal dependent on the mass error. This second unit is also associated with the empty tape to provide compensation for tape wear. Air blowers remove dust from the measuring units and the tape is scraped clean. The mass error signal is a direct voltage which is converted to alternating by a vibrating condenser, the output of which is amplified to operate a thermionic valve voltmeter indicating the magnitude and sense of mass error and is utilized to control the speed of conveyance of the tobacco. Compensation is provided for variations in the moisture content of the tobacco (see Group XXXVI). Specifications 361,998, 440,182, 646,746, [all in Group VI], 684,503, 781,041, [Group XXXV], 781,043, 781,044, 781,047, 781,049 and 781,050, [both in Group XXXV], are referred to.
