Abstract

780,832. Electric digital-data-storage apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Sept. 30, 1955, No. 27892/55. Class 106 (1). [Also in Group XXXVIII] In a circuit for establishing a connection between two sets 'of circuits via two stages of switches, one set of circuits is divided into groups 11 ... 14 to 41 ... 44, and each is connected to a corresponding switch HS11 ... 44 and each circuit W, R is multipled to a switch WGX1 ... 4, RGX1... 4 in turn multipled to a group of switches HS11 ... 14 &c. The switches WGX1 ... 4 are multipled to switches RGX1 ... 4 and control circuits are arranged for operating pairs of switches for setting up the desired transmission path. The switches are of a type having two transmission electrodes and a control electrode transmission occurring when a suitable potential is applied to the control electrode. The invention is described as applied to a magnetic storage drum DM to which information is applied through writing signal source W to a magnetic read/ record head 11 ... 44 from which information can also be fed out through reading amplifier R. Assuming it is desired to write through head 11 associated distributers WGX, WHX are set into the position 1, WGX1 closing directly the switch WGS1. The distributers also cause an output from gate G1 which passes through G2 to close the switch HS11. In a similar manner reading can take place simultaneously from head 44 by operating the distributers RGX, RHX so that potentials are applied to the leads RGX4,RHX4 causing through gates 93, 94, switch HS44 to close. The arrangement allows information to be written into the store through any head in a group and at the same time information can be read from a head in one of the other groups. In a practical embodiment, Fig. 2, the switch WGS1 consists of a pair of symmetrical transistors A, B as described in Specification 780,833, [Group XL (c)]. Normally the switch remains open due to a positive potential on the lead WGX 1. The switch HS11 comprises a symmetrical transistor C which is normally held in the off or open position by the connection of the base to a positive potential. When it is desired to write into head 11 a negative potential on lead WGX1 causes the transistor A,B to conduct and the switch WGS1 closes. Diodes MR6, MR9 are normally biased off, but the negative potentials on lead WGX1, WHX1 bias off diodes MR4, MR5 so that diode MR6 conducts, the base of transistor C falling so that it can conduct and switch HS11 closes. By applying potentials on the lead RGX1, RHX1 information could have been read from head 11 out through amplifier R. Protective circuits may be provided for ensuring that two head switches in one group are not closed at the same time, also that the write and read group switches in one group are not closed together. Switches of the type described in Specification 734,345, [Group XL (c)], employing two anodes and a single cathode may be used. Specification 780,831 also is referred to.
