A pushing plate 16, Fig. 2, which normally closes the front end of the body 3 of a vehicle can be moved rearwardly to eject material from the vehicle through a rear aperture which is normally closed by a downwardly hinging tailgate 23. In the trailer illustrated, the tailgate 23 rests when open on a plate 25 joining the lower edges of plates 24 which depend from the trailer body to define, with the tailgate 23, a discharge shoot. An upper gate 62 hinged at 63 to the body co-operates with the tailgate 23 which, when closed, bears against a bead 64 on the gate 62 to prevent its opening. The plate 16 is carried by rollers 20 secured to beams 18 extending rearwardly from the plate and running on hollow beams 9 at the upper edges of the sides of the open body 3. Plates 19, Fig. 1, extend downwardly from the beams 18 on the outsides of the beams 9 while inclined plates 17 on the insides of the beams 18 converge to provide a hopper formation. The plate 16 is moved rearwardly to eject material by a rope 26 reeved on each side of the body between pulleys 34 on the body and pulleys 35 carried by the plate 16, and led through the draft bar 11 to one drum of a winch 40 driven by the engine of the tractor vehicle 14. A single rope 42, Fig. 2, fast to a second drum of the winch 40 serves both to withdraw the plate 16 forwardly and, through a tackle 46, Fig. 1, secured to a rope 52, to close the tailgate 23. Parts of the rope 42 and of the pulleys guiding it are carried within the hollow beam 9 and within a hollow tranverse member 10. Spring buffers 57 limit the forward retraction of the plate 16. Where the vehicle is self propelled, the winch operating the plate 16 and tailgate 23 may be driven from its engine.
