Abstract

780,291. Packaging. SANNI, D. A. Oct. 11, 1955 [Oct. 15, 1954], No. 28907/55. Class 94(1). A package for dispensing powdered material comprises two side walls, one at least of which may be fluted, sealed together to form a pocket for. the contents, one end of the package having a further wall portion folded in the form of a pleat between the side walls and perforated, the further wall portion being capable of being opened out to permit discharge of the contents through the perforations. The package may be made from a single web or two or three webs of thermoplastic coated paper or the like. In one method of forming the package from a single web, the web 2 is fed continuously from a roll 6 by rollers 8, 10, to creasing rolls 12, 14, 16, 22 and adjustable take-up rolls 24, 26, 28, FIG. 4. 30. The web, having longitudinal perforations 4 and three longi- tunal creases, is fluted on both sides 54, 56 by members 34, 36 and folded on the creases by elements 50, 52, 58, 60 and 62, 64 to produce a pleat 55, 57 between the produce a pleat 55, 57 between the sides 54, 56. The sides 54, 56 are folded against each other and heat sealed between the flutes by rolls 66. The pockets so formed are gravity filled by apparatus 82 and the contents level is rendered uniform by a blower 84. The open pocket ends are sealed by wheels 88, and members 90, 92 cut off given numbers of packages and impress weakening lines 94 between them. In an alternative method of forming the packages from a single web, the web is folded and the pleat introduced prior to the fluting process. The folding is produced by shaped opposed shoes (not shown) and the flutes are formed by apparatus identical with that shown in Fig. 4 in which opposed rolls 328 seal and press the web about formers 334 on a chain 330. In other respects the apparatus is as shown in Fig. 1. In producing the packages from two webs, the main web 300, Fig. 4, passes through feed rolls 304, 306 and scoring rolls 308, 310, 312, 314 which produce a substantially medial score and scores 350, 352, to folding and fluting means. The web may be fluted before folding as in Fig. 1 or, after being folded by a shoe 321, may have the flutes and pockets formed by the members 334, 328. The pockets are filled by apparatus 354, 356 as before and a further perforated web, fed from a roll 370 and folded medially by a shoe 364, is introduced between the side walls which fold back about the scores 350, 352. The introduced web and side walls are sealed together by wheels 376 to complete the packages, the seal opposite the perforations being broken to permit sprinkling of the contents. The package side walls may each be formed from a single web, the webs being fluted prior to being sealed together and a third web being introduced after filling, as in Fig. 4. Only one web need be fluted. The perforations may be in each side of the pleat instead of along its fold.
