Abstract
780,287. Wheel rims. KELSEY-HAYES CO. Aug. 29,1955 [Oct. 25,1954], No. 24780/55. Class 144 (2). For use with a tubeless tyre, a wheel rim 1 comprising a base 4 with integral bead seating and retaining flanges 7, 5 at one side, and an annular gutter 6 at the other to receive a locking ring 13 for a detachable bead seating and retaining ring 2, includes also a rubber or like sealing member 18 carried by the detachable ring 2 and comprising spaced annular portions 19 sealed to the ring 2 and an intermediate annular portion 20 which is open to the inflation air within the tyre, as by means of holes 21 in the bead seat portion 14 of the ring 2, to be pressed thereby firmly into sealing engagement with the rim base 4. Fig. 1 shows the sealing member 18 as a rubber strip with thickened edges bonded to the sides of a radially inwardly facing recess in the underside of the detachable ring 2 defined by its axially inner terminal lip 15 and its locking-ring engaging rib 16. The holes 21 in the ring portion 14 lie axially inwardly of the tyre beads. The intermediate portion 20 of the sealing member may be ribbed for engagement with the rim base. The detachable ring 2 may be formed of strip stock instead of the mill section shown. Fig. 2 shows the sealing member 22 as a flat tube with its edge portions bonded to the detachable ring 23 and its radially inner side bowed radially inwardly for engagement with the rim base, communication with the tyre air space being via a tube 24 extending through a hole in the ring 23.
