Abstract

779,903. Variable speed hydrostatic transmissions. EBERT, H. Sept. 7, 1954 [Sept. 16, 1953], No. 25955/54. Class 69 (2). In an hydraulic transmission gear comprising a swash-plate pump 23 driving a swash-plate motor 24, the oscillating frame 23a of the pump is controlled by a piston and cylinder device having both main and auxiliary pistons whereby the gear can be controlled within two predetermined ranges. Movement of the main and auxiliary pistons 2, 4 in their cylinder 1 is controlled by a slide member 8 and a valve member 14, the latter being controlled by a centrifugal governor 15. Cams 13, 20 linked together and turned by a handle 20<SP>1</SP> act on the members 8, 14 and prevent an unintentional changeover from one range to another due to fall in engine speed. A control bush 14b is driven by a gear 14c at a speed proportional to that of the driving shaft 23b and the governor 15 thereon controls the member 14 which is also influenced by a spring 16 and the cam 20. Liquid from a pump 19 is supplied to the bush 14b and passes via pipes 9, 10, 11 to a bush 8b enclosing the member 8. When, on movement of members 8 and 14, liquid is supplied via pipes 18, 11 and 5, the pistons 2 and 4 move together to the right-hand end of cylinder 1 (Fig. 1) and the frame 23a is moved by a link 22 to give a 1: 1 drive. If the speed decreases, the spring 16 moves the member 14 towards the left and liquid reaches the cylinder 1, via pipes 18, 10 and 6 and the pistons 2 and 4 move to the left until the piston 4 abuts the cylinder head 1a The frame 23a is now in the position shown in Fig. 1 and the pump 23 delivers no liquid. For reverse drive, cams 13 and 20 are turned and the member 8 is moved to the left and liquid reaches the cylinder 1 via pipes 18, 11 and 7. The piston 2 then moves up to a stop 4a, the piston 4 being held stationary, and the frame 23a is moved in the opposite direction to drive the motor 24 in reverse. In a modification, the end 1a of the cylinder is replaced by an additional piston on the rod 3 sliding in a part of the cylinder 1 extending towards the link 22. In a further modification (Fig. 4) the main piston is fixed on a rotatable shaft 1c and the cylinder 3 is movable to effect adjustment of the transmission ratio. The wall 27 of the moving cylinder has cam slots 27a which move links connected to the swash-plates 23a, 24a of the pump and motor.
