Abstract
<PICT:0779804/III/1> Silicon tetrafluoride is prepared by reacting hydrogen fluoride with silicon dioxide suspended in a hygroscopic organic liquid solvent for HF having a boiling point not less than 350 DEG F., while maintaining the suspension at a temperature in excess of the boiling point of water but not exceeding the boiling point of the solvent. Solvents may be glycerine, or propylene, or ethylene glycol, and reaction temperature 250-350 DEG F. Glycerine is fed through inlet 7 to reaction vessel 1, where it is stirred by agitator 2 and heated by electric or steam heating jacket 6. Sand is continuously or periodically run in from bin 9 to form a suspension containing excess sand and while HF is fed through inlet 12 and mercury pool 15. The pressure may vary from 2 inches Hg below, to 4 inches water above atmospheric. The SiF4 leaves at 16 and may be passed to oxidizing chambers 18, where is is heated in the presence of the water vapour formed to yield silicon dioxide, which is deposited in separator 20, and HF, which is recycled by pump 23 to vessel 1.
