Abstract
Fluorine is incorporated in edible carbohydrates, especially sugar used in preparing foods, gums and lozenges, in proportions of one part of fluorine to 1,000-1,000,000 parts of the carbohydrate in order to render the product unsuitable for growth of Lactobacillus acidophilus and to destroy any Lactobacillus acidophilus in the oral cavity. The fluorine is preferably added as a compound soluble in saliva; suitable compounds are sodium, ammonium, calcium and potassium fluorides, sodium, ammonium and potassium silicofluorides, phosphofluorides and fluoborates, and compounds in which fluorine is substituted for hydrogen, or - hydroxyl groups in the carbohydrate molecule.
