Abstract
778,676. Rollers &c. HERAEUS QUARZSCHMELZE GES. Nov. 19, 1954 [Nov. 20, 1953], No. 33557/54. Class 42 (2). A drum for guiding fabrics, yarns, &c. during liquid treatment comprises a shell consisting of chemically-resistant material spaced from a cylindrical metal shaft at one end at least by carrier means having the same coefficient of expansion as the shell, at least one elastic sleeve being interposed between the carrier means and the shaft to absorb differences of radial heat expansion and annular thrust and torquetransmitting means serving to transmit drive from the shaft to the shell and to accommodate differences in axial heat expansion while maintaining the shell in axial compression. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the shell 1 is spaced from the shaft 6 by a centring bush 2 of the same material as the shell and an elastic sleeve 7, e.g. of rubber, which can accommodate differences of radial expansion due to temperature changes. Nuts 5 screwed on the shaft pin 6b act through a metal washer 4 and acid-resistant rubber packings 3 to maintain shell 1 under compression and transmit torque, packings 3 accommodating changes in axial heat expansion ; additionally, a helical compression spring may be located between the washer and the nuts. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the centring bush is replaced by a cap 22 ; differences of radial expansion are taken up by a sleeve 27, and of axial expansion by a rubber bush 23 and a helical spring 29. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the shell 31 is supported on shaft 36 by a disc 32 of the same material as the shell and rubber sleeve 37 ; axial compression and torque are applied through a helical spring 39, a flanged metal thrust member 38 and a rubber ring 33 ; the axial position of disc 32 is located by a set-screw 50. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5, the shell end is bevelled cr rounded at 51 and seats against a rubber packing 47 in a groove in cap 42 having an elastic sleeve 43 and the shell is under compression from a spring 49. The chemically resistant material may be a metal oxide, a metalloid, glass or ceramic material. The metal parts may be of stainless steel, the shaft may be hollow, and the end face or faces of the shell may have annular beadings to increase frictional grip. Only one end of the drum may have elastic coupling and compression-applying means, the cap or bush at the other end of the drum abutting a ring or shoulder on the shaft.
