Abstract
778,653. Echo-sounding. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Sept. 12, 1955 [Jan. 18, 1955], No. 1465/55. Class 118 (2). A recording echo sounder wherein a stylus is periodically moved across a recording surface has adjustable switch means for triggering the time base of a cathode-ray tube (C.R.T.) at any point of the movement so that the C.R.T. displays a selectable partial range only. The main drive shaft 12 which moves a stylus 6 by means of pulley 11 and belt 8 also drives a gear wheel 14 carrying a pin 15 which engages a switch contact 16 once in each sweep of the stylus 6. The contact 16 triggers a time base saw-tooth wave generating circuit 30 to deflect the C.R.T. 32. A known type of pulse generator 34 is synchronized with the start of travel of stylus 6 over the recording paper 1 and echoes received by transducer 33 are fed to an amplifier 35 and thence to the C.R.T. 32 and over lead 36 to the stylus 6. The length of time base provided by circuit 30 is only a fraction of the full record range and may be chosen to lie anywhere in the said range by adjustment of the contact 16. This is controlled by a knob 21 which also moves an endless cord 24 carrying a cursor 28 having marks 29. These are spaced in correspondence with the time base length and are read against the main depth scale, not shown.
