Abstract

778,355. Glass. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. Nov. 29, 1955 [Dec. 29, 1954], No. 34139/55. Class 56. A glass, particularly for the minor segment of a multifocal opthalmic lens and having a softening point above 1382‹F, a coefficient of thermal expansion 7.0 to 10.0 Î 10<SP>-6</SP> per degree between 25 and 300‹C, and an index of refraction (D line) between 1.57 and 1.67 comprises (per centage parts by weight) SiO 2 , 35-52; one or more of the alkali metal oxides, 6-12; BaO, 28-34; ZrO 2 , 2-15; and one or more oxides selected from CaO, ZnO, PbO, CdO, SrO 5-15 but preferably not more than 10 per cent any one. Optionally there may be present TiO 2 up to 5; Al 2 O 3 up to 5; fining agents (e.g. As 2 O 5 and Sb 2 O 4 ) up to 2 and fluorine up to 1.5 per cent.
