Abstract

1459178 Glass-forming compositions K V DOSTAL 21 Feb 1974 [21 Nov 1972] 53778/72 Heading C1M A composition suitable for forming into a glass comprises the following oxides (or their precursors), in weight per cent on the oxide basis: the said oxides totalling at least 90% by weight of the glass; and at least 10% by weight of the composition being provided in the form of fly ash (fine ash obtained by burning coal). The fly ash is preferably fine enough to pass a 30 mesh British Standard Sieve. The glass may further comprise, as optional constituents, Na 2 O 0À5-5, K 2 O 0À5-5, Li 2 O up to 2, PbO up to 5, MnO 2 up to 2, B 2 O 3 up to 5, and/or one or both of As 2 O 3 and Sb 2 O 3 up to 2 in total. Some of these optional oxides may derive from the fly ash. The glass may be rendered crystallizable by the inclusion of 1-10% BaO and/or ZnO, together with TiO 2 as nucleating agent, optionally with one or more other nucleating agents (the nucleating agents preferably totalling 0À5-10%). Optional nucleating agents include ZrO 2 up to 6, Cr 2 O 3 up to 4, P 2 O 5 0À1-4, SnO 2 up to 3, V 2 O 5 up to 2, F- up to 6, and S<SP>=</SP> and/or SO 4 <SP>=</SP> 0À1- 2. The glass may be formed by melting the batch, including the fly ash, at 1400-1550‹ C. for 3-8 hours. Suitable glasses may be crystallized to the corresponding glass-ceramic by heating at 2-10‹ C./min. to just below the softening point, heating at 750-1200‹ C. for “ 3 hours, and then cooling at up to 10‹ C./min. to, e.g., about 600‹ C.
