Abstract

Metal is coated by dipping it in a composition containing a polyvinyl resin dispersed in a plasticiser therefor in which the resin is insoluble at ordinary temperatures, an epoxy resin, and a hardening agent therefor which is also a crosslinking agent for the polyvinyl resin, and the coated metal is heated to a temperature at which the polyvinyl resin forms a gel and is cross-linked by the hardening agent. The hardening agent may be an aliphatic polyamine or mixture of polyamines, e.g. an alkylene polyamine of the formula H2N-(CR2-CR2-NH-)n-H, where R represents hydrogen, methyl, ethyl or propyl and n is from 1 to 5, e.g. triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine, pentaethylene hexamine, hexamethylene tetramine, tripropylene tetramine, guanidine and Vulcacit TR, a mixture of polyamines. The epoxy resin is preferably of the bisphenol type, and of low molecular weight, and the vinyl resin may be a polymer of vinyl chloride on a copolymer of vinyl chloride with a compound such as vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride. Pigments, fillers and stabilizers may be included. An exemplary composition comprises "Geon" (Registered Trade Mark) 121, 100 parts, dioctyl phthalate, 60 parts, lead silicate 2 parts, pigment 3 parts, Epikote resin 834 (a condensation product of epichlorhydrin and diphenylopropane) 15 parts, and tetraethylene pentamine, 1 part.ALSO:Metal is coated by dipping it in a composition containing a polyvinyl resin dispersed in a plasticizer therefor in which the resin is insoluble at ordinary temperatures, an epoxy resin, and a hardening agent therefor which is also a cross-linking agent for the polyvinyl resin, and the coated metal is heated to a temperature at which the polyvinyl resin forms a gel and is cross-linked by the hardening agent. The hardening agent may be an aliphatic polyamine or mixture of polyamines, e.g. an alkalene polyamine of the formula H2N-(CR2-CR2-NH-)n-H where R represents hydrogen, methyl, ethyl or propyl and n is from 1 to 5. The epoxy resin is preferably of the bisphenol type, and of low molecular weight, and the vinyl resin may be a polymer of vinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with a compound such as vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride. Pigments, fillers and stabilizers may be included. The surface of the metal, which may be, e.g. mild steel or aluminium may be lightly etched with a mineral acid or ferric chloride solution, before coating. The coated metal may, after the coating containing the epoxy resin has set, be given a second coating of a heatgellable paste which does not contain an epoxy resin.
