Abstract

A coating composition comprises a copolymer of an ethylenic carboxylic acid amide with at least one other monomer containing a terminal methylene group, the copolymer having at least part of the amido hydrogen atoms replaced by the group <FORM:0977820/C3/1> wherein R is hydrogen or a lower aliphatic or heterocyclic radical and R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl radical containing up to 20 carbon atoms, and at least 0.5% by weight of the copolymer of a hydrolysable aminosilane, e.g. aminoalkylalkoxysilanes. Preferred copolymers are those made by reacting with formaldehyde a copolymer of acrylamide or methacrylamide. If the formaldehyde is used in the form of a solution in an alcohol, then the reaction is accompanied by etherification of the methylol groups produced. The compositions may also contain ethylene polymers, vinyl halide polymers, epoxy resins, nitrocellulose, alkyd resins, epoxidized oils, aminoplasts, pigments, pine oil and solvents, e.g. toluene, xylol, butanol methyl isobutyl ketone, isophorone, butyl acetate, isopropyl acetate, ethyl alcohol and ethylene glycol monoethyl ether acetate. The resulting compositions are applied to glass surfaces and cured by heating. The examples describe compositions containing the following polymeric ingredients and hydrolysable aminosilanes: (1) an acrylamide/styrene/ethyl acrylate copolymer reacted with formaldehyde and butanol and gamma-aminopropyltriethoxysilane; (3) a copolymer and silane as in (1) and an epoxy resin made by reacting bisphenol A with epichlorohydrin; (4) an acrylamide/styrene/methacrylic acid copolymer reacted with formaldehyde and butanol, delta-aminobutylmethyldiethoxysilane and an epoxy resin as in (3); (5) an acrylamide/ethyl acrylate copolymer reacted with formaldehyde and butanol, N-(beta-aminoethyl) -beta-aminoethyltriethoxy silane and nitrocellulose; (6) a copolymer as in (1), a silane as in (5) and an alkyd resin prepared from tall oil acids, coconut oil acids, glycerin and phthalic anhydride; (7) a copolymer and silane as in (1) and polyethylene; and (8) a copolymer and silane as in (1) and a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate/maleic acid copolymer. Specification 826,652 is referred to.ALSO:Glass panels are coated with a composition comprising a copolymer of an ethylenic carboxylic acid amide with at least one other monomer containing a terminal methylene group, the copolymer having at least part of the amido hydrogen atoms replaced by the group: <FORM:0977820/B1-B2/1> wherein R is hydrogen or a lower aliphatic or heterocyclic radical and R1 is hydrogen or a C1-C20 alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl radical (see Division C3), and at least 0,5% by weight of the copolymer of a hydrolysable amino organosilane. The compositions may also contain solvents, e.g. toluene, xylol, butanol, methyl isobutyl ketone, isophorone, butyl acetate, isopropyl acetate, ethyl alcohol and ethylene glycol monoethyl ether acetate, ethylene polymers, vinyl halide polymers, epoxy resins, nitrocellulose, alkyd resins, epoxidized oils, aminoplasts, pigments and pine oil. After application to glass surfaces the compositions are cured by heating. The examples describe the application by spraying, brushing or drawing to glass surfaces of solutions containing the following polymeric ingredients and hydrolysable aminosilanes: (1) an acrylamide/styrene/ethyl acrylate copolymer reacted with formaldehyde and butanol, and gamma-aminopropyltriethoxy silane; (3) a copolymer and silane as in (1) and an epoxy resin; (4) an acrylamide/styrene/methacrylic acid copolymer reacted with formaldehyde and butanol, delta-aminobutylmethyldiethoxy silane and an epoxy resin; (5) an acrylamide/ethyl acrylate copolymer reacted with formaldehyde and butanol, N-(beta-aminoethyl)-beta-aminoethyltriethoxy silane and nitrocellulose; (6) a copolymer as in (1), a silane as in (5) and an alkyd resin; (7) a copolymer and silane as in (1) and polyethylene; and (8) a copolymer and silane as in (1) and a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate/maleic acid copolymer. Specification 826,652 is referred to.
