Abstract
A lubricating composition, suitable for use at extreme pressures, comprises lubricating oil, a sulphurized or phosphosulphurized terpene containing 10-50 per cent by weight of combined sulphur and a chlorinated hydrocarbon or chlorinated phenol, the proportions of the ingredients being so chosen that the composition contains 0.5-2.0 per cent by weight of combined chlorine. Terpenes mentioned are dipentene, carene, alpha-pinene and camphene, and sulphurization may be effected by reaction with elemental sulphur. Phospho-sulphurization may be effected by heating the sulphurized terpene with red phosphorus or by reacting the terpene with a mixture of elemental phosphorus and sulphur or a mixture of phosphorus sulphides. The chlorinated hydrocarbon may be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic, for example chlorinated petroleum waxes, chlorinated paraffinic earth waxes, chlorinated terpenes (such as dipentene, carene, alpha-pinene or camphene), trichlortoluol, chlorinated indene, hexachloroethane, octachloropropane, hexachlorocyclohexane and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane. Suitable chlorinated phenols are pentachlorphenol and trichlorxylenol. In an example, a mixture of sulphurized dipentene (containing 33.5 per cent of combined sulphur) and chlorinated camphene (containing 67 per cent of combined chlorine) is added to mineral lubricating oil to give a composition containing 1.32 per cent of combined chlorine. For comparison purposes, the addition to mineral lubricating oil is described of mixtures of (a) sulphurized and chlorinated paraffin wax and kerosene, (b) P2S5-treated bright stock and chlorinated benzyl sulphide and (c) chlorinated paraffin wax and phospho-sulphurized methyl ester of rosin acids. The Provisional Specification refers generally to a lubricating composition comprising a major proportion of lubricating oil and a minor proportion of a blend of a sulphurized or phophosulphurized terpene and a chlorinated hydrocarbon.
