Abstract

776,653. Electric thickness gauges. TELEGRAPH CONSTRUCTION & MAINTENANCE CO., Ltd. Sept. 14, 1954 [Sept. 14, 1953], No. 25349/53. Class 40 (1). Apparatus for measuring, e.g. thickness of a cable C (Fig. 1) comprises two spaced feeler gauges located at right angles across the cable, whereby the sliders of two potentiometers are separately adjusted by the positions of the armatures 10 of the feelers to give output signals indicative of the thickness, the outputs being added in a meter to indicate the average thickness. The feeler gauges are mounted on adjustably inclined plates 1, the upper half of the gauge comprising a spring-loaded head 8, and the lower half a roller 11 adjustable by rotating a spring- loaded threaded rod 22, the zero position being indicated by a mechanical gauge G. The readings on the meter indicating the average thickness may be used for manual or automatic control apparatus. The apparatus may be used with elliptical cross-section material, the gauges being located across the major and minor axes. Instead of feeler gauges the apparatus may employ two light beams located adjacent to the point of extrusion shining across the cable into photo-cells.
