Abstract

776,559. Timing egg-cooking. HEATON, H Dec. 30, 1955 [Oct. 5, 1954], No. 28579/54. Class 28(1) A timing device for removing eggs from boiling water when cooked, comprises a pivoted assembly consisting of upper and lower water chambers 17, 21 in communication through a valve controled aperture 22, means whereby water may be supplied to the upper chamber, which has egg carryinig means 35 for immersion in pan R, draining means 40, 41 for the lower chamber, a catch for holding the assembly in operative position, Fig. 1, catch releasing trip mechanism operable by a hollow float 38 in the lower chamber, and means on the upper chamber for indicating the setting of the valve. The upper chamber or reservoir 17 has a closed end 18 to which is attached egg carrier 35 and an open end closed by a cap 19 carrying a pipe 36 having a tundish 37 at its end. An internally screw-threaded boss 23 on top of reservoir 17 receives a threaded valve stem 24 whose lower end is coned to form a part 25 which normally closes aperture 22. The upper end of stem 24 has a knurled head 26 with a pointer 27 which is moved over an indicator 28 as aperture 22 is opened and closed. A rod 29 slidably mounted in a bore in stem 24 is supported on head 26 by a shoulder 29a and extends downwardly into the lower chamber 21. The lower chamber is drained through an aperture 40 normally closed by a mushroom valve 41 having a stalk 41a by which it is opened. A boss 30 on top of reservoir 17 is pivoted, with distance pieces 32, 33 to centralize it, on a pin 31 whose ends are fitted into arms 14, 15 formed at the tops of posts 12, 13 supported on a foot 11. The tops of arms 14, 15 are connected by a crossbar 16 to which is secured a slotted arm 43 pivoted to a bell crank lever 45 having, at its ends a detent 47 and toe piece 48 respectively. A. vertical pillar 49 mounted on top of reservoir 17 has a detent 50 to engage toe piece 48'while a stirrup 51 pivoted to arm 43 engages detent 47. A rod 53 may be attached to cap 19 to receive balance-weights 55, Fig. 2, not shown. In operation, water is poured into the reservoir 17, the valve inlet 22 is adjusted, an egg is placed in cradle 35 and the water chamber assembly is tilted so as to immerse the egg in a receptacle of boiling water. The assembly is held in operative position until water draining from reservoir 17 into the lower chamber has raised the float 38 to release the trip mechanism.
