Abstract

Organic metal salts are prepared by reaction between an inorganic metallic base and a saponifiable or neutralizable organic material, the process comprising subjecting the reactants to a rate of shear of at least 50,000 reciprocal seconds. The process is applicable to the neutralization of alkyl phenol sulphides, fatty acids having at least 12 carbon atoms in the molecule and sulphonic acids and to the preparation of soaps by saponification of fats and fatty oils. Calcium and barium hydroxides are specified bases. The reactants may be subjected to the high rate of shear in a Gaulin homogenizer, a paint or ink mill, a Morehouse mill or a pressure viscosimeter. The mixture of reactants may be subjected to the high rate of shear in the reaction zone or the mixture may be continuously circulated between the reaction zone and a treating zone, subjection to the high rate of shear taking place in the treating zone. Alternatively, separate streams of the reactants may be subjected to the high rate of shear and then mixed or a partially reacted mixture of the reactants may be subjected to the high rate of shear to complete the reaction. The preparation of the barium salt of p-iso-octyl phenol sulphide is described wherein a slurry of hydrated barium hydroxide crystals in oil and a separate stream of the alkyl phenol sulphide in oil are mixed and subjected to a rate of shear of about 50,000-500,000 reciprocal seconds at about 175-225 DEG F.ALSO:A lubricating grease composition is prepared by mixing together an inorganic metallic base and a soap-forming organic acid or an ester thereof in a lubricating oil and subjecting the mixture to a rate of shear at least 50,000 reciprocal seconds prior to the substantial completion of the soap-forming reaction. Suitable, soap-forming organic acids and esters thereof are high molecular weight fatty acids, such as stearic, behenic, erucic, oleic and hydrogenated fish oil fatty acids, and animal and vegetable fats and oils, such as lard, tallow, rapeseed oil and hydrogenated fish oil. The mixture may be subjected to the high rate of shear in a Gaulin homogenizer, a paint or ink mill, a Morehouse mill or a pressure viscosimeter. Apparatus for the preparation of lubricating greases according to the method is described. In the examples, lubricating greases are prepared according to the method from (1) hydrated lime, hydrogenated fish oil fatty acids, acetic acid, di- 2 - ethylhexyl sebacate and phenyl alpha - naphthylamine, (2) hydrated lime, hydrogenated fish oil fatty acids, acetic acid and mineral oil (3) hydrated lime, oleic acid and mineral oil and (4) hydrated lime, tallow, mineral oil, calcium chloride and water.
