Abstract

776,158. Radio wave absorbers. GENEST GES. FUR ISOLIERUNGEN, W. March 8, 1954 [March 28, 1953], No. 6735/54. Class 40(7) [Also in Group XIII] In order to prevent the reflection of radio waves from the walls of a test chamber, thin parallel sheets, Figs. 1-16 or tubes, Figs. 18, 19 (not shown) spaced approximately #/3 are mounted so as to project from the surface of the wall 1, the attachments being formed of or coated with electric and/or magnetic lossy material such that the effective loss resistance decreases towards the surface of the wall. When parallel sheets are employed they may be disposed perpendicularly to the wall or at an acute angle thereto, Fig. 7 (not shown) and may comprise sheets 2 of loss-free material (thickness ¢-3 mm) such as paper, wood or polystyrene with a coating 3 (thickness 0.02-0.2 mm.) of lossy material such as graphite or powedered iron. The required resistance variation is acheived by increasing the thickness of the coating 3 in steps, Fig. 5, or uniformly, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), from the free edge of the sheet towards the edge attached to the wall or the coating may be of uniform thickness the free edges of the sheets being serrated, Fig. 1 and Figs. 3, 4, 11-14 (not shown) and/or the height of the sheets being varied cyclically, Figs. 9 and Figs. 11-14 (not shown). In order to absorb waves polarized in any direction magnetic and electric lossy coatings are arranged alternately or each coating may comprise magentic and electric lossy materials or a further set of parallel sheets is disposed perependicularly to the first set in egg box form, Figs. 3, 4, 13 and 14 (not shown). In a modification, Figs. 15 and 16 (not shown), capable also of absorbing sound waves, the sheets are perforated and the spaces between the sheets are filled with sound absorbing material such as glass fibre plates. The Specification refers to a known form of absorber comprising dielectric layers with interposed conductive films whose surface resistance decreases towards the base.
