Abstract

1502314 Sound insulation LOCKHEED AIR. CRAFT CORP 1 April 1975 [8 April 1974] 13235/75 Heading F2X [Also in Divisions B4-B5] A sound absorbing panel comprises first and second waveguide arrays located side-by-side and each comprising a plurality of side-by-side acoustical waveguides of non-uniform length and having adjacent open ends defining the sound receiving end of the array, the open ends of the first and second waveguide arrays lying in a common geometric surface, the soundreceiving ends of like waveguides in each of said first and second arrays being spaced from each other by a distance not more than approximately the resonant wavelength of those waveguides divided by the square root of pi, and waveguide terminating means so disposed with respect to the waveguides at the ends thereof opposite the open ends as to result in an array of waveguides having lengths corresponding to different resonant frequencies. The embodiment shown in Fig. 1 comprises a fine honeycomb core structure 1 having proximate bundles of waveguides each terminated at the closed ends by an oblique partition 2, each operative unit being enclosed by wall members 3-6, the bundle of waveguides being cut obliquely to vary the effective lengths of the waveguides along the length of the cut. The cells of the honeycomb, which may be made of plastics, paper, metal or ceramics may be of hexagonal, round, square or triangular crosssections, the group enclosure formed by wall members 3-6 being square, round, hexagonal, triangular or rectangular. The sheet 2 may be of porous or non-porous material and the walls 3 to 6 and backing sheet 7 of metallic or non- metallic material, the optional facing sheet 9 being sound-permeable, the composite structure being assembled by welding, adhesive bonding or mechanical interlocking. The embodiment shown in Fig. 2, comprises a non-porous backing sheet 11, a sound transparent facing sheet 12, cell-enclosing walls 13 and 14 and reflective terminating partition 17 enclosed between the upper 15 and lower 16 sections of a cut honeycomb core. The embodiment shown in Fig. 3 comprises wall members 18 and 19, upper 21 and lower 22 honeycomb sections separated by sound relective partition 23 and sound transparent sheets 24 and 25.
