Abstract

A fire protection agent comprises an ammonium phosphate, a carbohydrate or proteinaceous material and a mixture of a urea-acrolein resin and a urea-formaldehyde resin. Suitable ammonium phosphates are mono-ammonium phosphate, di-ammonium phosphate, calcium ammonium phosphate, magnesium ammonium phosphate and mixtures thereof with boric acid. Specified carbohydrates and proteinaceous materials include starch, degraded starch, gum tragacanth, flour and solid polyhydric alcohols, e.g. mannitol. Inert fillers, e.g. titanium white, barium sulphate, powdered quartz and kieselguhr may also be present. In the examples, a urea-formaldehyde resin is mixed with (1) a urea-acrolein-formaldehyde resin made by partially condensing urea with acrolein, the product being condensed with formaldehyde, mono-ammonium phosphate, calcium phosphate, soluble starch and asbestos powder; (2) mono-ammonium phosphate, diammonium phosphate, magnesium phosphate, cereal or vegetable flour, asbestos powder and an aqueous solution of an incompletely condensed ureaacrolein resin; (3) urea-acrolein-formaldehyde resin of Example 1, mono- or diammonium phosphate, boric acid, pea flour, gum tragacanth and asbestos flour. The resin composition may be applied by brushing or spraying, or a suspension of ammonium phosphate and the carbohydrates, if desired, with small quantities of the resin mixture may be applied to the surface of the material to be coated, dried and a solution of the resin applied, or the resin solution is applied to the surface and the other components applied in a dry form to the wet resin.
