Abstract

775,221. Hydraulic dampers. BOURCIER DE CARBON, C. M. L. L. March 9, 1955 [March 9, 1954 ; Dec. 14, 1954], No. 6990/55. Class 108(3). The piston of a hydraulic damper comprises respective passages 21, 22, Fig. 9, for liquid flow in both directions through the piston, and controlled by valves formed by flat discs 23, 24, sufficiently flexible to flex under the pressure of liquid in the passages, the discs, the valve seats being so shaped as to provide substantially linear contact between themselves and the valves. The valve may be spaced from the seat by a few tenths of a millimeter in its " closed " position. A part of the seating may be cut away at an angle to the plane of the seating Fig. 4 (not shown), in order to provide a bleed flow through the valve. The same object may be obtained, Fig. 3 (not shown), by arranging the valve 23 or 24 so that it does not quite cover the whole of the port 21. As shown, the valves 23 and 24 are of substantially annular shape in plan view and are retained by a rigid plate 26. The latter has a projecting tongue 28 which limits deflection of the valve 23. In the construction shown in Figs. 6 and 7, a circular stack of valve discs 9, 10, and 11, control the flow through ports 1 in a laterally extending portion of the piston body 14. A second valve 9<SP>1</SP>, 101 and 11<SP>1</SP> controls flow in the opposite direction through ports 1<SP>1</SP> in a portion 16 of the piston body which extends generally at right angles to the portion 14 of the piston body. The portions of each valve which overlap the piston body portions, are supported by stops 17, against excessive deflection. When used as a vehicle damper, the diameter of the ports 1 may depend upon the ratio between the road wheel travel relative to the chassis, and the stroke of the piston 14, 16, in its cylinder. French Specification 1,020,109 is referred to.
