Abstract
774,953. Making pipe fittings. WEATHERHEAD CO. June 24, 1955 [July 13, 1954], No. 18304/55. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXVIII] Jointing by forging.-A method of making a hose coupling comprises machining bar stock to provide a body 5 having a central bore 6, forming an annular rib 8 on one end face of said body coaxially of the bore, providing an opening in the bottom of a metal cup 10 of a diameter equal to the outer diameter of said annular rib, telescoping the opening in the cup on said rib, placing a brass nipple 13 with a projecting flange 14 at one end within said rib with the flanged end of the nipple in engagement with said body and thereafter upsetting said rib to overlie at least portions of the cup bottom and of the nipple, thereby to secure the body, cup and nipple to each other coaxially. The rib 8 is provided with a shoulder 9. The coupling parts are arranged in a holder 16 and a first punch 17 provided with an annular pointed projection 19 displaces the rib 8 outwardly as at 20 and inwardly as at 21 (Fig. 2). The coupling is indexed or transferred beneath a second punch 22 (Fig. 3) which upsets the portion 21 of the rib into overhanging tight engagement with the nipple flange 14. Finally the coupling is indexed or transferred beneath a third punch 25 (Fig. 4) provided with a flat face 27 which forces the rib portion 20 outwardly into tight engagement with the flange 11 of the cup 10. The coupling is now ready for crimping into a length of hydraulic hose 29 as shown in Fig. 5. If the body portion has an internal thread as at 1a (Fig. 6) the parts are arranged on a holder 33 having a stem 34 supporting a pin 35 aligned with the bore in the body portion.
