Abstract

Soapstock which contains phosphatides is treated by dispersing a protein in the soapstock, splitting the soapstock with acid, and then allowing the resultant mixture to settle into a fatty matter layer and an aqueous layer. The term "soapstock" includes soapstock obtained from alkali refining of animal and vegetable oils, and also "foots" from oil-processing works and "lecithin sludge," a distillation residue from the solvent extraction of oils. The protein is preferably casein in the form of skim or powdered milk or sodium caseinate, but may also be groundnut protein, soya protein, blood albumen or plasma, egg albumen or gelatine, and may be added either as such in quantities greater than 0.01 per cent, preferably 0.05-0.3 per cent, or alternatively in the form of a mucilage made from protein meal and caustic soda solution. Suitable protein meals for making such a mucilage are blood meal, herring meal, meat and bone meal, fish meal, and extracted groundnut meal, and such meals are generally added in amounts of about 0.5 per cent based on the soapstock. The acid to be used in splitting the soapstock after adding the protein is preferably sulphuric acid in slight excess, but may also be hydrochloric, nitric, phosphoric, acetic, citric or oxalic acid. The separation of the treated soapstock into layers occurs in a matter of minutes, as compared with several hours required when protein is not added.
